Healthy smiles begin with simple habits

Most people believe that brushing their teeth once a day keeps dental problems away. The truth is, oral hygiene demands more than a quick sweep with a toothbrush. It calls for regular care, the right technique, and preventive habits that ensure lasting dental health.

Dr Mandakini Shukla, an alumna of Apeejay School, Sector 15, Faridabad, and a healthcare services professional who graduated from Subharti Dental College, points out that awareness remains one of the greatest challenges. “The biggest challenge is raising awareness about oral hygiene. Despite high levels of education, many are unaware of the need for proper dental care,” she said and added that children, in particular, often suffer dental issues because of poor eating habits and that preserving even milk teeth is crucial for healthy development.

Many people assume that if there’s no pain, there’s no problem. Yet, as dentists often remind us, oral diseases are silent until they reach an advanced stage. Regular dental visits every six months can catch early signs of decay or gum trouble and prevent complex, costly treatments later.

Dr Shukla reinforces the importance of consistent daily care. “There are a few things that all students must do. First, brushing twice a day is essential. Second, regular flossing is crucial, as it goes beyond what brushing can achieve. I also recommend visiting a dentist every six months, even if no immediate issues are apparent, to prevent future dental problems.”

Dentist’s Daily Routine:

1.       Brush twice daily using a soft-bristle brush and fluoride toothpaste.

2.       Floss once every day, preferably before bedtime.

3.       Rinse after meals and limit sticky, sugary foods.

4.       Visit the dentist twice a year for cleaning and check-ups.

Caring for your teeth isn’t just about a bright smile; it’s an investment in overall well-being. Preventive habits, followed with discipline, protect not only your oral health but also your confidence and comfort. As Dr Shukla’s guidance reminds us, good dental care begins with awareness — and it’s the small daily choices that keep every smile strong for life.
