From readers to leaders

In an age dominated by scrolling screens and fleeting digital content, the culture of book reading remains one of the most powerful tools for intellectual and personal growth among school and college students. Books do more than convey information; they cultivate imagination, deepen empathy, refine language skills, and strengthen critical thinking. A sustained reading habit shapes not only academic success but also character and perspective.

For school students, reading beyond textbooks broadens horizons. Fiction enhances creativity and emotional intelligence, while biographies inspire resilience and ambition. Nonfiction introduces young minds to science, history, philosophy, and global issues in ways that nurture curiosity. At the college level, reading becomes even more transformative. It sharpens analytical reasoning, enriches vocabulary, and develops the ability to engage with complex ideas—skills essential for higher education and professional life.

Importantly, reading builds concentration in a world increasingly fragmented by notifications and short-form media. The discipline of engaging with a book for extended periods strengthens attention span and cognitive endurance. Moreover, exposure to diverse authors and cultures fosters open-mindedness and cross-cultural understanding—qualities indispensable in today’s interconnected world.

Schools and colleges play a vital role in sustaining reading culture. Well-stocked libraries, book clubs, author interactions, and reading challenges can transform reading from an obligation into a pleasure. Encouraging discussions around books helps students engage more deeply and develop confidence in expressing their views.

“Beyond personal enrichment, book reading can open doors to meaningful career paths, particularly in the publishing industry. Students who cultivate a love for literature may find opportunities as editors, proofreaders, literary agents, content developers, translators, or publishing managers. The publishing ecosystem also includes roles in book design, marketing, digital publishing, and rights management. With the rapid growth of e-books, audiobooks, and online platforms, the industry now blends traditional literary expertise with digital innovation, creating dynamic career avenues for young professionals,” shares Manan Bajaj, an alumnus from Apeejay School, Panchsheel Park.

Additionally, strong reading habits are foundational for careers in journalism, academia, law, civil services, creative writing, and media. “The ability to comprehend, interpret, and articulate ideas clearly is rooted in consistent reading. Those passionate about storytelling may pursue authorship, while others may contribute behind the scenes, shaping manuscripts into impactful publications,” he said in conclusion.
