Sudhanshu Mishra, an alumnus of the 2011 batch of Apeejay Institute of Technology – School of Architecture & Planning, has steadily built a name for himself in the architecture industry. Soon after graduation, he joined the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA), where he spent a decade working in the domains of planning and architecture. However, his deeper interest in design and space-making inspired him to establish his own venture – Brij Associates. Initially started alongside his job, the firm became his full-time focus post-2020. Today, as the Principal Architect of Brij Associates, Sudhanshu is dedicated to creating thoughtful, user-centric spaces. In this insightful conversation, he shares his learnings from the field, industry best practices, and practical advice for the next generation of architects.
What are some key challenges architects face when balancing design vision with client expectations?
One of the most common hurdles is aligning architectural integrity with client satisfaction. Clients often come with specific ideas, and it’s essential to honour those while ensuring the design remains functional and aesthetically sound. This balance is achieved through detailed planning, active listening, and open communication. That’s what helps build trust and great designs.
How important is client understanding in creating successful architectural outcomes?
It’s absolutely crucial. Every project begins with decoding the client’s lifestyle and preferences. For instance, in residential projects, we explore how the family lives day to day. This helps create customised spaces that are both meaningful and practical. The involvement of the client throughout the process ensures satisfaction and smoother execution.
What role does on-site collaboration play in executing a design successfully?
Execution is where the real test lies. It’s a collaborative effort – electricians, plumbers, structural consultants, everyone must be aligned. Miscommunication can derail the best designs, so clear briefs, regular coordination, and mutual respect among all stakeholders are essential. When that sync happens, the final result is always fulfilling.
What should young architects prioritise as they prepare to enter the field?
Focus on practical exposure. Be observant and learn from every site and mentor. Understand that while creativity is key, so is adaptability. Clients may not always speak the language of design—you have to interpret their vision and deliver excellence. Each project is a learning experience and an opportunity to innovate.
