Design your dream space

A well-designed space has the power to transform the way we feel, think and interact. From cosy homes to vibrant classrooms and modern cafés, interior design plays a crucial role in enhancing the beauty and functionality of any space. It is not just about decoration; it is a thoughtful process that combines creativity, aesthetics and practicality to create environments that are both appealing and comfortable.

One of the most important elements of interior design is colour. Colours can influence mood and perception. Soft and neutral tones often create a calm and relaxing atmosphere, while bright colours can make a space feel energetic and lively. Choosing the right colour palette helps set the tone of a room and makes it visually harmonious.

Another key element is lighting. Proper lighting can dramatically change the look and feel of a space. Natural light makes rooms appear larger and more welcoming, while artificial lighting such as lamps, pendant lights and spotlights can highlight specific areas or decorative features. A balance between natural and artificial lighting is essential to create a warm and functional environment.

Furniture also plays a significant role in interior design. The right furniture should not only match the theme of the room but also provide comfort and usability. Smart placement of furniture ensures better movement and makes the space look organized rather than cluttered.

In addition, textures and décor elements such as rugs, curtains, cushions, artwork and indoor plants add personality to a space. These details bring depth and character, turning an ordinary room into a visually engaging environment. Even small additions like mirrors can make a room appear brighter and more spacious.

According to Drishya Sharma, an alumna from Apeejay Stya University, “For students interested in creativity, art, and architecture, interior design can be an exciting career option. Interior designers work on homes, offices, hotels, restaurants, and retail stores. They combine creativity with technical knowledge to plan layouts, choose colours, furniture, and materials.”

“Students can pursue courses such as a Bachelor’s degree or diploma in Interior Design after school. Skills like drawing, visualization, space planning, and knowledge of design software are important in this field. With the growth of real estate and modern housing, the demand for skilled interior designers is increasing,” she said in conclusion.
