Share your recent achievements.
This year has been especially memorable for me. I served in school as an academic prefect and received the prestigious Dr Stya Paul Award for Human Values. These recognitions boosted my confidence and motivated me to continue working hard with sincerity and dedication.
Tell us about your award-winning poem, A Moment in Time.
It was written during the Spirit’s Inter-school Competition organised by the Rotary Club. I represented my school and created the poem on the spot, continuing from a given opening line, which made the experience exciting.
How did you feel after winning the prize?
Winning the second prize made me feel proud and validated, as my efforts were recognised. Competing against students from higher classes, I had low expectations, so this achievement encouraged me greatly and strengthened my confidence as a young writer further.
What inspired you while writing this poem?
When I first read the opening line, ideas began flowing naturally in my mind. I did not consciously plan the poem; instead, the words emerged spontaneously, guided by emotion and imagination, making the writing process feel effortless and deeply personal.
What message did you wish to convey through the poem?
I wanted to express the quiet, resting nature of time. It reflects my desire to escape busy city life and rest in nature’s calm embrace, enjoying peace, stillness, and a moment of serenity away from constant noise.
What creative process do you follow while writing poems?
My creative process usually begins with brainstorming ideas, sometimes with my mother’s suggestions. Once I decide the opening line, I follow a rhyme scheme and allow the poem to flow naturally, letting words connect smoothly and complete the piece fully.
How has the school supported your interest in writing?
The school has played a significant role in nurturing my love for writing. My teachers, especially English educators, encouraged me, and having my poems and stories published in the school magazine gave me motivation and belief in my abilities.
