CBSE’s new AI curriculum a game changer for careers

CBSE has rolled out a new curriculum focused on Computational Thinking and Artificial Intelligence (AI) for students in Classes 3 to 8. The move signals a clear shift towards introducing technology-driven learning much earlier in school education.

The syllabus has been developed with support from a range of academic institutions and educators. Contributors include faculty from IIT Madras, Azim Premji University, and Dhirubhai Ambani International School. The Centre for Creative Learning at IIT Gandhinagar was closely involved in shaping the framework. School principals and subject teachers were also part of the process to ensure the content remains practical inside classrooms.

The announcement was made during a press briefing attended by Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, NCERT Chairman Dinesh Prasad Saklani, and CBSE Chairman Rahul Singh.

This step places India alongside countries like Finland, Singapore, and South Korea that have already introduced artificial intelligence at the school level. The focus is not just on technology but on building thinking skills early, including problem solving, logical reasoning, and digital awareness.

The programme is supported by three key resources. These include a structured curriculum framework, a handbook for teachers, and classroom learning materials designed to make teaching easier and more consistent.

To widen access, the Ministry of Education has asked for the content to be available in multiple Indian languages. NCERT will work with state-level bodies to adapt the material for regional use.

CBSE is also planning to introduce competency-based assessments for skill subjects, aligning them with global standards such as PISA. Alongside this, the board is exploring semiconductor technology as a new subject for higher classes.

The larger goal is clear. Schools are being pushed to move beyond textbook learning and prepare students for a future shaped by technology and data.
