Budding journalists experience visit to the Indian parliament

The students of the School of Journalism and Mass Communication (SJMC) at Apeejay Stya University (ASU), Gurugram, had a remarkable learning experience as they visited the Indian Parliament and witnessed a live session. This visit provided them with an in-depth understanding of parliamentary proceedings, political debates, and the crucial role of journalism in shaping public discourse.

During their visit, the students had the opportunity to listen to influential leaders and speakers including Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar, Jyotiraditya Scindia, Jaya Bachchan, Randeep Surjewala, Jairam Ramesh, Gajendra Singh, Sonia Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, Sudhanshu Trivedi, and Rajiv Shukla. Each of these prominent figures contributed to thought-provoking discussions, offering valuable insights into the workings of the government and policy-making processes.

For aspiring journalists, this experience was more than just an educational tour—it was a real-world lesson in political reporting, ethical journalism, and the responsibility of the media in democracy.

Sharing her views, a SJMC student Diya Bhattacharya expressed, “Stepping into Parliament, I felt the weight of history and responsibility. Decisions shaping 140 crore lives are made here. The Budget Session was intense—discussions on the Pradhan Mantri Internship Scheme, MSP, and finance led by Nirmala Sitharaman. Watching it unfold live was a powerful reminder of democracy in action.”

Another student Kajal Shukla highlighted, “Visiting the Parliament, the true temple of democracy, was an awe-inspiring experience. Witnessing Nirmala Sitharaman and Prahlad Joshi respond to questions on the Pradhan Mantri Yuva Internship Yojana and Krishi Udyog highlighted the depth of policy discussions. The session reflected the dynamic exchange of ideas shaping India’s future.”

Beyond politics, the visit emphasised the importance of balanced reporting and fact-based journalism.

Pranav Kumar Jha, a first-year student at SJMC said, “I went to the Parliament, and it was incredible. I had the chance to see a Rajya Sabha session, and every conversation was fascinating and well-informed. We have the chance to meet Deputy speaker, Shri Harivansh, and our foreign minister, S. Jaishankar. All of the ministers had a discussion about Jharkhand’s cell phone tower and tourism.Following the session, we toured the old parliament and saw the first copy of the proposed constitution. The visit was fantastic. I am grateful to SJMC department for providing us with this wonderful opportunity.”

Diniya Raju, a second-year BJMC student, “I got an incredible opportunity to visit the Parliament of India, where I saw my favourite politicians in person. The experience was fabulous as I walked through the corridors of Parliament, which are filled with historic architecture. I met The Deputy Speaker Shri Harivansh, the Minister of Finance of India Nirmala Sitharaman, and the Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution of India, Pralhad Joshi. I would like to thank Apeejay Stya University and the School of Journalism and Mass Communication for providing me with this wonderful opportunity.”
