BeyondBooks: ‘This school helped me showcase my strengths’

He is at present studying in Class XI at Apeejay Pitampura and has taken up the non-medical Science stream. He aims to clear JEE Mains and Advanced and go into the top IITs. His hobbies include music in the form of playing the tabla and sports like Table Tennis (played at the state level), Chess and Golf. Meet R Karthik Sundareshwaran.

In a candid interview, he shares the secret behind his calmness and focus during competitive exams.

What have Olympiads taught you? What skills have you learnt?

Olympiads have been a strong learning experience for me. I cleared MVPP in Class 9 with a rank of 41 in Delhi and SOMT in Class 10 with a rank of 22. These exams demand a different way of thinking, where rote learning never works. A deep grasp of concepts is essential. Olympiads sharpen logical reasoning, especially subject-focused exams like IOQM, NSEP, and NSEC, while MVPP and SOMT also offer rich and valuable learning.

How do you stay calm and focused during competitions or exams?

Staying calm and composed is a direct consequence of your confidence in your preparation. If you know all the concepts, there is no need to stress. If, after a few minutes of the beginning of the exam, you feel like you are not able to do anything, just take a deep breath, drink some water, pray to God, and the issue will be fixed.

What do you enjoy most about music, and why is it important to you?

I began learning music at the age of six, and it has remained a constant since then. I am trained in Hindustani classical vocal music and tabla, holding Senior Diplomas with Distinction in both. Music offers a different perspective on life and brings balance, focus, and positivity to my daily living.

Do you see any connection between solving Olympiad problems and practising music?

There is a strong connection between music and solving Olympiad problems. Music is scientifically known to strengthen neural connections, which helps in better recall of learnt concepts. It also stimulates the hippocampus, a key centre for creativity. Creativity is essential when tackling challenging Olympiad questions. Most problems hinge on identifying one crucial idea, which then leads to the solution. Music nurtures this creative thinking and helps sustain it over time.

How does the school support you in your endeavours?

The school has been very supportive.  The teachers are very qualified and have taught me a lot. The school has provided me with a platform to showcase my skills in academics, music, sports and Olympiads. Being part of the school orchestra team has improved my musical skills of taal, raag, sur and lay.

How do you hope to balance academics and music as you grow older?

Life is a game of time management. One needs to carve out time for one’s priorities. There is always time to pursue one’s interests. Therefore, I hope to continue to learn music as I grow older.
