Meet Mohammad Akmal, a Commerce student at Apeejay School, Noida, who has been with the school since Class III and has grown remarkably in academics and co-curricular arenas. A gifted orator and passionate theatre performer, he has been active on stage from a young age. Recently honoured with the English Dramatics Award, he continues to inspire peers with his confidence and talent.
Know more about him…
Who inspired you to enter the world of acting and oratory?
Rather than one particular source of inspiration, it was the people around me who first recognised my ability to speak and perform. Their guidance nurtured my skills and helped me realise what I enjoy doing. As I began receiving opportunities and appreciation, that recognition itself became my motivation to keep improving and stay involved in dramatics and public speaking.
What do you enjoy most about performing?
What excites me the most is being on stage in front of an audience. The spotlight brings a unique energy and confidence that is difficult to express in words. The way the audience reacts, connects, or even laughs makes the performance fulfilling. It feels like a moment where you’re completely yourself while playing someone else.
Do you wish to pursue theatre as a career?
Theatre and acting are passions I want to continue, especially while I am a student, because they give me confidence and joy. However, I do not see it as my full-time career at the moment. Still, I believe it will always remain a strong part of my life as a hobby and a creative outlet.
Your favourite role so far and why?
The role of ‘Tradition’ from last year’s Annual Day function is definitely my favourite. I played an antagonist who represented male dominance in society. The character had a strong emotional arc, from arrogance to guilt and repentance, which made it extremely impactful and challenging.
How do you emotionally prepare for a character?
For any character, I try to step out of being Akmal and step into the imaginary person I’m representing. I picture the situation, the struggles, and emotional reactions that the character would have. Once the mindset shifts, emotions flow naturally, and I can express them better. It’s a process of transformation that takes focus and imagination.
Which actor do you admire the most?
Shah Rukh Khan, without a doubt. His journey from being an outsider to becoming one of the biggest stars in the world is inspiring.
What has been your most challenging performance till now?
It has to be in ‘Tradition’. There were scenes where I had to showcase deep grief and regret. Displaying raw emotion in front of a large audience was extremely challenging. It required internalising the situation and bringing out those feelings convincingly. That emotional shift pushed me as an actor and helped me grow.
Any unforgettable backstage moment you would like to share?
One day before the Annual Day function, a behind-the-scenes reel was being recorded. I performed many scenes on stage, yet the only moment captured was me trying on a robe that was hilariously short for me! That candid clip is still on the school’s Instagram, and every time I see it, I laugh at how unpredictable theatre moments can be.
How has your journey at school helped you grow?
This school has shaped a big part of who I am today. Academics may be the same everywhere, but personality development depends on the environment you’re in. From my first stage appearance in Class IV to the opportunities after COVID-19, every experience built my confidence. Teachers and mentors believed in me, and that belief helped me believe in myself.
