Co-scholastic activities play a vital role in nurturing creativity, confidence, and discipline among students, helping them grow beyond academics while discovering talents that shape their personality and overall development. Meet one such student, Kirti Lalaso Mohite, a student of Class VI-C, Apeejay School, Kharghar, Navi Mumbai. In a candid interview, she shares that she has always been curious about different art forms, but dance has held a special place in my heart.
What first inspired you to choose Kathak?
I was interested in dance since childhood, so my parents suggested I join a classical Kathak dance course. They felt it would give me both discipline and a chance to explore my passion more deeply.
Which is your favourite aspect — footwork, expressions, or storytelling?
It has to be the footwork. The melodious sound that comes from the ghungroos has always fascinated me and motivates me to practice harder every day.
What important lessons has this dance form taught you?
It has taught me patience. Mastering complex footwork, rhythmic patterns, and intricate movements requires extensive practice over time, and that effort has made me more determined and resilient.
How does practising Kathak help you with focus and discipline in your studies?
It helps me develop independent thinking skills through the analysis and interpretation of Kathak performances. This concentration reflects in my academics as well, where I can study with better focus and discipline.
What do you enjoy most about the cultural heritage and history of Kathak?
I enjoy the storytelling aspect of ancient India that this dance form carries within its heritage. It feels like travelling back in time and learning about history through dance.
How does Kathak connect you to Indian traditions and stories?
It connects me to Indian traditions and stories through dance, rhythm, and expressive hand gestures. Every performance feels like bringing an old tale alive for the audience.
What challenges do you face while learning, and how do you overcome them?
Initially, I struggled with stage fright and expressions. I overcame these challenges by performing in competitions and stage programmes, which gave me confidence and improved my presentation.
How does the school support you?
The school has given me the opportunity to participate in multiple programmes and cultural events while ensuring that my academic performance remains balanced and unaffected.
