BeyondBooks: ‘I love the footwork & spins in Kathak’

At present, studying in Class VIII at Apeejay School, KhargharKhyati Suri finds joy in Science and Mathematics, drawn to problem-solving and fresh concepts. Free time goes into reading, sketching, and cycling. A devoted Kathak learner since age four-and-a-half, she reflects on how her school continues to nurture her artistic passion.

When did you first develop an interest in Kathak, and what inspired you to pursue it?

It started when my aunt visited us from Delhi and noticed my expressions and natural rhythm. She suggested that I should learn Kathak. The very next month, my parents enrolled me in Kathak classes, and I began to enjoy this beautiful dance form.

Who or what has been your biggest influence in your dance journey so far?

My teachers and seniors have been the biggest influence in my dance journey. Watching them perform even the most difficult movements with such ease, elegance, and grace inspires me to keep learning and improving every day.

How has your training in Kathak shaped your discipline, confidence, or creativity?

Kathak requires regular practice and attention to detail. It has also given me a lot of confidence, especially when performing on stage in front of an audience. Most importantly, it allows me to express emotions, which has greatly enhanced my creativity and imagination.

How do you balance your academics with your passion for dance?

I focus on completing my schoolwork first, then use my free time or weekends for Kathak. Because I enjoy both, I make sure to give time to each without letting one affect the other.

Which performance or stage experience has been most memorable for you, and why?

Although every performance has been memorable, I can refer to the recent performance that was in Bahar, our dance academy’s annual event; I got the chance to perform in front of Pt Rajendra Gangani.

What do you enjoy most about Kathak compared to other dance forms?

What I enjoy most is its beautiful combination of rhythm, expressions, and storytelling. It also allows me to tell stories using hand gestures and facial expressions. I also love the sound and beat of the footwork, chakkar (spins), and the connection with classical music.

If you had to inspire other students to try Kathak, what would you tell them?

I would tell them that Kathak is not just a dance, it’s a beautiful way to express yourself, build confidence, and stay connected to our culture. It improves focus, discipline, and brings a lot of joy.

How does the school/teachers support you?

They provide me opportunities to participate in various events, which help me gain experience and confidence. I also have the chance to learn and share the stage with my friends and seniors, some of whom are skilled in classical dance forms like Bharatanatyam.
