BeyondBooks: ‘I love primary colours for their impact’

She is at present in Class XII, pursuing PCM with Physical Education with an aim to make a career in design. Apart from academics, she enjoys drawing, playing the flute, and playing chess. Meet Niharika Ganipisetty from Apeejay School, Kharghar, who loves creativity and is curious. In a candid interview, she talks about how she likes to explore new ideas and express them through art.

When did you first discover your interest in sketching, drawing, and painting?

I discovered this interest during the COVID-19 pandemic, around Class VI-VII. We had a lot of free time then, and social media, especially YouTube, was very popular. Watching art videos inspired me to start sketching just as a fun activity, which later turned into a passion. Most of my learning has come from YouTube video tutorials that are easily available.

What inspires you when you sit down to draw?

It depends on my mood and purpose. I often draw nature, portraits, or anime characters. For my design exams, I also practice one-point and two-point perspectives. Sometimes, I recreate scenes from memory. Inspiration can come from daily life, objects, or even just an idea that crosses my mind.

Where do you usually find your inspiration from?

I find inspiration in nature and everyday activities. Almost anything around us can be turned into art. I also follow many artists on social media and YouTube channels, which spark new ideas for me.

How has art helped you express yourself?

Academically, I have always been good, but art gives me a way to express my emotions, thoughts, and observations in a visual form. It helps me share parts of myself that I cannot always put into words.

Any favourite colours or paint combinations?

Yes, I mostly use primary colours. They allow me to create the full range of shades. Primary colours also help in highlighting important themes in posters or paintings.

Is there any artwork you are especially proud of?

Yes, in Class XI, I drew two portraits of anime characters. They were displayed on the school’s board, and I was appreciated for that. It remains very close to my heart.

How has your school supported your artistic journey?

My school encourages creativity, and my teachers have been very supportive. We often get opportunities to participate in competitions. For example, I recently took part in a Rotary drawing and poster competition. Earlier, I also led my house team in the backdrop competition, and we won it.
