She started learning Bharatnatyam because it is such a beautiful dance form. She has always been fascinated by the dresses, costumes, and the graceful way dancers move and express emotions. Meet Anika Negi, a student of Class VI at Apeejay School, Kharghar. In a candid interview, she talks about what she loves the most about this dance form, among other things.
How long have you been practising, and what do you enjoy most about it?
I have been practising for the past three years. I really enjoy performing during our Annual Bharatanatyam dance programme for Onam and our Annual Day.
Which part of Bharatnatyam do you find most expressive?
The asamyukta hasta (hand movements) and drishti bheda (eye movements) are the most expressive parts for me.
Do you have a favourite dance piece or performance you’ve done?
Yes, my favourite performance was during our Annual Function when we performed an act based on The Ramayan. It was a memorable experience for me.
How do you balance your dance practice with academics?
I attend my Bharatnatyam classes on certain specific days, and on other days, I focus on my academics and school activities.
What has Bharatnatyam taught you beyond dance?
This dance form has taught me much more than just dance. It has improved my physical stamina, memory, and concentration through learning complex sequences. It has also helped me understand teamwork, coordination, and how to perform our best as a group.
What challenges do you face while learning this dance, and how do you overcome them?
The training can be difficult, especially mastering demanding poses like aramandi (half-sitting position). But with regular practice and guidance, I am improving.
How does the school support your dance?
My dance teacher is very encouraging. She helps us express our creativity, provides us opportunities to perform at school functions, and trains us for inter-school competitions. She always motivates us to try something new.
