Fashion photography may look glamorous, but stepping into this world requires far more than technical precision. Over the years, while guiding students exploring creative careers, I’ve noticed that those who succeed understand one essential truth: Photography is not just about the camera; it is about vision, voice, and purpose.
Koushik Roy, alumnus of Apeejay School, Kharghar, and an international fashion and advertising photographer who has worked with brands like Dior, Christian Louboutin and Paul Smith to name a few said, “Beyond a camera technique, it is very important to establish the role you are playing while taking a photograph, you could be a soul visiting earth and taking memories for yourself, or just documenting something immortalising an event for a life time. An ability to tell a story is something that can be developed from a young age. Photography is only a medium.”
This perspective shifts the focus from equipment to expression. An aspiring fashion photographer must cultivate storytelling skills, emotional intelligence, and creative thinking early on. The ability to observe details, interpret trends, and translate abstract ideas into striking visuals sets great photographers apart. Strong communication is equally critical.
Fashion shoots involve collaboration with designers, stylists, models, art directors, and brands. Clarity of thought and confidence in direction help build trust within a team. Professionalism, adaptability, and time management further strengthen one’s reputation in a competitive industry.
Students often ask whether formal education is necessary or if a powerful portfolio is enough. The answer lies in balance. “A formal education is very important to be able to see a visual and express it in words so that later you can create a visual worth a thousand words. Some simple theories of colour, principles and elements of design and some Gestalt theories come in use here. Good work has to have a fine balance of business, art and design, and it attracts industry connections on its own,” Roy explained.
A compelling portfolio opens doors, but education refines perspective. When artistic depth, business understanding, and industry relationships come together, a sustainable and impactful career in fashion photography becomes possible.
