Read edited excerpts:
How did your journey into filmmaking begin?
My interest in filmmaking started at Apeejay School, Pitampura. We had a mass communication course in our 11th and 12th grades. Additionally, in 9th and 10th, we had a filmmaking workshop and a club in association with PVR, focusing on road safety. These experiences sparked my interest in filmmaking. Our mass communication faculty recommended Whistling Woods International to me, and that’s how my journey began.
What role did Apeejay play in shaping your career?
Apeejay played a significant role in my career. Our principal was instrumental in convincing my father to let me pursue my dreams at Whistling Woods. The school provided numerous extracurricular opportunities, such as the photography and filmmaking clubs, and theatre fests, which helped me explore my interest in filmmaking. The flexibility in choosing courses across different streams was also a great advantage.
Can you tell us how you started working in this industry?
I started working in the industry while still in college, securing my first job as a floor intern on the Kapil Sharma Film. Balancing college and part-time work taught me a lot. My first gig as an executive producer was in my second year of college, working on a music video for Midhaven, a rock metal band.
What inspired you to start Pink Moon Pictures?
After working on over 50 commercials and several blockbuster films, I felt confident enough to start my own venture. Pink Moon Pictures aims to produce original content and organise film festivals. We want to promote filmmaking in Delhi and create opportunities for local talent. We also plan to hold workshops in schools, colleges, and NGOs to nurture young talent.
What challenges did you face as an executive producer?
As an executive producer, managing low-budget short films was challenging. Ensuring the collaboration of the entire team, despite creative and professional differences, was crucial. One significant challenge is getting the content exhibited. Making a film is relatively easy, but ensuring it reaches the audience is the real task. Balancing the creative and logistical aspects is key.
Can you share a memorable experience from your projects?
Shooting the web series “Tanav 2” in Kashmir was unforgettable. The beauty of the place, combined with the challenges of shooting in extreme weather and high-security areas, made it a unique experience. Despite the difficulties, such as lack of electricity and delays due to security alerts, the camaraderie and teamwork made it memorable.
What advice would you give to aspiring filmmakers?
Firstly, keep your horizons open and be realistic about the challenges in the industry. Watching a variety of cinema is crucial for learning. While film school provides a foundation, practical experience on set is invaluable. Networking, patience, and knowing when to assert yourself are essential. Also, always stay motivated and manage stress effectively.
How do you see the future of independent films and OTT platforms in India?
The future of independent films and OTT platforms in India is promising. Post-COVID, audiences are more inclined towards OTT platforms, and there is a growing appreciation for independent films. However, there needs to be a balance between blockbuster films and independent cinema. For independent films to thrive, there must be more literacy and awareness among audiences, especially in tier-three cities. Pink Moon Pictures aims to bridge this gap by creating content that resonates with all segments of society and promoting filmmaking at the grassroots level.
How do you stay motivated amidst the demanding schedules of film production?
Staying motivated requires finding time for yourself, even if it’s just 15-20 minutes a day. Self-reflection keeps you grounded. Maintaining calm on set is crucial, as the team relies on you. Building a positive environment and finding moments of joy, even in stressful situations, helps keep the motivation alive.
What habits have contributed to your success?
Worshipping my work and having patience have been key. Learning to say no and drawing boundaries respectfully have safeguarded my growth. Knowing your worth and asking for what you want is crucial. Balancing work and personal life, staying motivated, and constantly learning have been integral to my journey.
