At Apeejay Stya University (ASU), students are encouraged not just to pursue academic excellence but also to cultivate holistic growth, confidence, and real-world skills. One such alumnus who truly embodies this spirit is Saurabh Dalakoti, a proud graduate of the B.Tech (Computer Science Engineering) programme. Today, Saurabh is successfully working as a Software Engineer, building on the strong foundation he gained during his academic journey at ASU. In this candid conversation, he reflects on his student days, career milestones, and the lessons that shaped his professional life. Read edited excerpts:
Tell us briefly about yourself, your goals and why did you choose to pursue engineering?
I decided to pursue engineering right after my 12th class. Back then, it was one of the most sought-after career choices, especially in the Computer Science stream, which was known for its career prospects and lucrative opportunities. Having prior exposure to programming in classes 11 and 12, I naturally gravitated towards it. My goal was to build a career where technology and problem-solving come together—and engineering seemed the right fit.
How did your Computer Engineering degree at Apeejay Stya University prepare you for your role as a Software Engineer?
The academic approach at ASU was holistic. Unlike many traditional engineering colleges in India, it wasn’t purely theoretical or academically intense. Instead, it focused on real-world applications and practical-based learning. This approach helped me immensely in understanding how to apply classroom knowledge in actual work scenarios.
What were some of the most valuable skills—technical or soft—that you developed during your time at ASU?
On the technical side, I learned how to transform thoughts into working code, along with gaining knowledge in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. On the soft skills front, I grew through exposure to public speaking, art, and philosophy. These diverse experiences gave me confidence and a well-rounded personality.
How have projects, internships, or classroom experiences played a big role in shaping your career?
I still recall my first real-world project in C++—it gave me invaluable hands-on experience. The university’s mandate to take external internships proved to be a blessing, giving us early exposure to industry work. Apeejay Stya University encouraged us to pursue NPTEL courses and rewarded us with equivalent credits. These experiences kept us aligned with 21st-century learning.
What advice would you give to current students who aspire to work with top tech companies?
My advice is simple—focus on fundamentals, stay updated, and build strong foundations. A solid base in core concepts will always give you an edge, regardless of how technologies evolve.
How did ASU contribute to your overall personality development and confidence outside academics?
ASU gave me ample time and opportunities to reflect on life, explore my interests, and confidently pursue what I loved. This balance between academics and self-discovery shaped my personality and made me who I am today.
