A transformative session on menstrual hygiene

Menstrual hygiene is a crucial aspect of health education that significantly impacts the well-being, education, and empowerment of school students. However, it remains a topic shrouded in silence and stigma in many parts of the world. Raising awareness about menstrual hygiene is essential to break these taboos and to ensure that students, particularly girls, can manage their menstruation safely, hygienically, and with dignity.

To break all taboos and spread this crucial information, Apeejay School, Mahavir Marg conducted a highly informative and engaging session on ‘Menstrual Hygiene’. The session was held at the Auditorium of the school which was conducted for the girls of classes V to X.

The session began with an engaging overview of the female reproductive system. Ms Sangeeta Nistandra, the Principal of the school explained the various parts and their functions in simple, easy-to-understand language, helping the students grasp the intricacies of their internal systems. This foundational knowledge set the stage for a deeper discussion on menstrual health.

Ms Nistandra then delved into the details of the menstrual cycle, emphasising its significance in a girl’s life. She explained the biological processes clearly and reassuringly, highlighting that menstruation is a natural and important aspect of female health.

Understanding the prevalence of myths and misconceptions about menstruation, the Principal addressed these intricacies directly. She dispelled myths and clarified the importance of maintaining good menstrual hygiene. This approach helped demystify the topic, making the girls feel more comfortable discussing it openly.

The Principal’s approachable demeanour quickly won the confidence of the students, encouraging them to candidly share any issues they might be experiencing. She invited questions, creating a safe and supportive environment where the girls felt at ease discussing their concerns. This interactive approach ensured that each student felt heard and valued.

In addition to the core topic of menstrual hygiene, the Principal also discussed the importance of a good diet and regular exercise. She introduced simple exercises that the girls could incorporate into their daily routines, promoting overall well-being. This holistic approach emphasised that good health practices are interconnected and essential for managing menstruation effectively.

The session was highly interactive, with students actively participating and expressing their trust in the Principal by sharing personal problems. Ms Nistandra promised a follow-up session to provide tailored solutions to their issues, further reinforcing their confidence in her support.

The students thoroughly enjoyed the session and found it extremely beneficial. They left with a deeper understanding of menstrual hygiene and a greater sense of support from their school. They felt immensely grateful to the Principal for addressing such a vital, student-oriented issue and for her readiness to assist each individual.

The session not only provided essential knowledge but also fostered a strong bond between the students and their Principal. It ensured that they felt supported and understood during a critical phase of their lives.
