Famous authors are renowned for their literary contributions, but some of them also possessed a streak of inventiveness that extended beyond the literary world. These authors not only crafted compelling stories, but also left a mark on the world through their innovative ideas and creations.
Let’s explore five inventions by famous authors that showcase their diverse talents and contributions to fields beyond literature.
- Samuel Morse – Telegraph
Samuel Morse, best known for developing Morse Code, was not just an inventor but also a skilled author and painter. His invention, the telegraph, revolutionised long-distance communication. Morse’s telegraph system, which transmitted electrical signals over wires, paved the way for modern telecommunications. Morse Code, an encoding system that allowed messages to be sent through telegraph wires, is still used today in various forms of communication.
- Mark Twain – Self-Pasting Scrapbook
Mark Twain, the author of classics like “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” and “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer,” was also an inventor. He patented three inventions during his lifetime, with the self-pasting scrapbook being one of the most notable. Twain’s scrapbook featured a water-soluble adhesive on each page, allowing users to moisten a page and attach clippings or mementos without using glue. This invention aimed to simplify the process of creating scrapbooks, making it more accessible to a broader audience.
- Arthur Conan Doyle – Sherlock Holmes’ Forensic Tools
Arthur Conan Doyle, the creator of the iconic detective Sherlock Holmes, introduced many innovative forensic tools and techniques in his stories. While not directly responsible for inventing these tools, Doyle’s portrayal of Holmes inspired real-life forensic scientists. Some of the techniques, such as fingerprint analysis, bloodstain pattern analysis, and firearm identification, went on to become essential components of modern forensic science.
Expressing her views, Kreetina Rai, an MA English Semester 3 student at Apeejay College of Fine Arts (ACFA) in Jalandhar, stated, “I believe Arthur Conan Doyle was a remarkable writer with an inspirational imagination. Not only did he create an amazing work like Sherlock Holmes, but the forensic techniques, such as fingerprint analysis and bloodstain pattern analysis, were born from his ideas of investigation in Sherlock Holmes. His imagination was the inspiration for a new chapter in forensic studies.”
- Mary Shelley – Frankenstein’s Monster
Mary Shelley, the author of the groundbreaking novel “Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus,” introduced the world to one of the most iconic figures in the realm of science fiction: Frankenstein’s monster. Although her creation is fictional, it sparked discussions about the possibilities and ethics of reanimating life. Shelley’s work laid the foundation for the science fiction genre and influenced countless inventions, particularly in the fields of robotics and artificial intelligence.
- Ray Bradbury – The Not-a-Heli-Writer
Ray Bradbury, famous for his dystopian novel “Fahrenheit 451,” once experimented with an invention he humorously named the “Not-a-Heli-Writer.” Essentially, it was a flying device equipped with typewriter-like keys and a camera. The contraption allowed Bradbury to write and take photographs while hovering in the air. Although the Not-a-Heli-Writer was more of a playful creation than a practical one, it showcased Bradbury’s boundless imagination and inventive spirit.
Isn’t it quite interesting to learn about these famous authors who have not only enriched the world with their literary masterpieces, but have also left a lasting legacy through their inventive ideas. These groundbreaking inventions have revolutinsed the lives of individuals. The authors have shown that creativity knows no bounds. Their inventions continue to impact our lives and spark the imagination of generations to come, reminding us that literature and invention can coexist in the minds of these exceptional individuals.
